How to Dress Taper Candles: 3 Simple Methods for Different Intentions

3 Simple How-Tos for Candle Dressing with Taper Candles

There is no one “right” way to dress candles, and there is no single philosophy that every practitioner follows.

That said, there are a few simple and intuitive ways to think about candle dressing with taper candles. These guidelines can help you match the way you anoint a candle to the intention behind your spell work.

TL;DR: 3 Simple Candle Dressing Ideas

  1. Use the candle to symbolize yourself.
  2. Use the candle as a pointer toward or away from a person or situation.
  3. Most importantly, dress the candle in a way that clearly symbolizes your intention to you.

1. Use the Candle to Symbolize Oneself

In this method, the candle represents you and your situation.

  • To bring something to you: Anoint from the ends of the candle toward the middle of the candle.
  • To be rid of something: Anoint from the middle of the candle upward toward the wick, then from the middle downward toward the base of the candle.

With this system, the candle is being used as a symbol of oneself.

2. Use the Candle as a Pointer

Another symbolic system is to use the candle as a pointer, directing it toward or away from yourself depending on your goal.

  • To bring something to you: Point the wick toward yourself and anoint from the bottom of the candle toward yourself.
  • To be rid of something: Point the wick away from yourself and anoint from the bottom of the candle toward the direction the wick is pointing.
  • To cast a spell on someone: Point the candle in the direction of your target and anoint from the bottom of the candle with the wick toward your target.

In the last example, the work is symbolically being sent away from the practitioner and toward the target.

Note: Be aware that this is generally considered aggressive magic.

3. The Most Important Thing

Regardless of how you choose to work your spells, the key is to think of how you dress your candle as symbolizing to you your intention.

These guidelines should not be presented as universal rules, because candle dressing traditions vary a lot. Different practitioners follow different systems, and what matters most is that your method feels meaningful and clear to you.
