Hoodoo Control-and-Influence Oils: How to Choose the Right One for Your Spell

TL;DR – To help clarify the differences, Twichery organizes "Control-and-Influence" oils into levels of pressure:
Understanding the style and level of influence behind each formula helps you choose the most appropriate tool for your work.
At Twichery, our goal is to honor traditional conjure practices while making the distinctions between these oils clear and accessible for modern practitioners.
If you've spent any time looking through traditional hoodoo formulas, you may have noticed something confusing: there are several oils that appear to do almost the same thing.
Names like Bend Over, Do As I Say, Domination, and Controlling — and even Follow Me Boy and As You Please — all fall into the general category of influence work: magic intended to directly affect another person's behavior, decisions, or cooperation.
This overlap isn't a mistake.
In traditional folk magic, formulas often developed in different regions and communities. Over time, similar types of work acquired different names, even when the underlying intention was closely related.
Because of this, many practitioners treat these formulas as interchangeable.
At Twichery, however, we prefer to clarify the subtle differences so practitioners can choose the tool that best fits their situation and values.
At Twichery, we organize "influence work" into four general levels:
Guide → Command → Dominate → Force
Each step increases the amount of pressure being applied.
Understanding where a formula sits on this spectrum makes it much easier to choose the right oil for your intention.
Level 1 formulas gently steer behavior or encourage someone to move in a certain direction by making you more energetically diplomatic and easy to follow.
It works this way because our As You Please Oil is, frankly, acting more upon you than upon them. In this way, it is more a confidence booster aimed at oneself than a controlling oil aimed at them.
The message behind As You Please Oil is:
"I am confident here and people want to do as I please."
Follow Me Oils encourage devotion, attachment, and emotional compliance in relationships. It is about a half step up the control ladder from As You Please. Follow Me Oils are directed at them and intended to steer their behavior or decisions without direct confrontation. They feel willing to act in ways that please you, but the influence is subtle and cooperative rather than forceful.
The message behind any Follow Me Oil is:
"You are drawn to follow my lead and remain loyal to me."
Level 2 formulas emphasize authority. Rather than subtly guiding someone, you are asserting that your words carry weight and should be followed.
Our Do As I Say Ritual Oil encourages obedience through authority. It is still acting upon the spellcaster, making your words carry weight so others naturally feel inclined to follow your instructions.
The message behind Do As I Say Oil is:
"When I speak, you will do what I tell you to do, and you will not be able to resist because my spell is when I speak, people do what I say."
Twichery doesn't carry a product called "Commanding Oil," but this is where most traditional formulas by that name would fall within the influence ladder. These formulas are typically used to reinforce personal authority and establish dominance in a situation, and they are generally activated by words you speak as commands (even if done in a whisper).
A Second Angle for Using "Commanding Oil"
A second type of use for "Commanding Oils" works again upon the practitioner (if you work it that way). Used this way, it is most certainly a charisma spell.
The message behind a "Commanding Oil" used in this way is
"My presence ITSELF is commanding."
If ideas on this level don't feel right to you, but you do know you need to control the situation, then you may want to select an influence oil from Level 1 instead. (Or just get creative and come up with ideas that get the situation itself under control without controlling the people in it. This is my favorite and best recommendation with regard to any situation that needs to be gotten under control.)
Level 3 formulas establish a clear power dynamic in which you are the one in control.
Domination Ritual Oil is used to establish yourself as the dominant person in a relationship or situation, reinforcing leadership and control. It basically pushes others down to a position beneath you.
The message behind Domination Oil is:
"I occupy the dominant position here. I am the one in authority, and you will recognize my authority and you will comply with it and you will be fine with it."
These formulas apply the strongest pressure and require very careful thought before using. This is where we start getting extreme, and whatever consent is left starts flying right out the window.
Work with Saint Martha Ritual Oil is an appeal to Saint Martha to exert her controlling influence on your behalf.
The message behind Saint Martha work is:
"You will obey because a greater authority stands behind me."
For people who already hold Saint Martha in spiritual authority, this work can feel especially powerful because their own faith reinforces the command.
Bend Over Ritual Oil is a stronger domination formula that adds a level of humiliation to the mix, because the person can see he's being controlled and can't do a thing about it. If it's used publicly, it can be even more humiliating.
The message behind Bend Over Oil is:
"I am applying pressure, and when I apply any pressure to any degree, even if it's subtle and you don't know why, my spell says that you will submit to my will."
Using Controlling Ritual Oil is not in any way nice. The herbs within it are powerful. Your target's thoughts are no longer his own, and even his will is no longer his own. It's pure mind control, really. The person's consciousness is present yet helpless back there (somewhere in the mind) and unable to do anything but watch as a completely different force (i.e. you) is taking over his thoughts and actions.
The message behind Controlling Oil is:
"I am in control of you now, and resistance is futile."
Thankfully there is a redeeming quality to this oil and it's that knowing how to work with it successfully takes practice. And if you don't get good at it, it simply won't work. That's good news for your target.
Control & Bind Quikspell is our essential-oil version of any of the Control and Influence oils. The strength of it depends entirely upon the wording and intention of your spell, but it is nothing to be trifled with.
The message behind Control & Bind Quikspell Oil is:
"Your actions are restricted and bound under my control."
This oil can also be used to bind anything one might bind overall. If you know how to do it, you can use it to repair a rope or fix a broken vase (for example). This is obviously a very benign use of our Control & Bind formula.
As you may have already read in my blog post, Getting Clear on Your Own Philosophy of Witchcraft, I NEVER recommend ANY of my Control and Influence oils, simply because seeking to control anyone with magic goes against my own personal moral code.
The strongest I would ever personally recommend any level of Control and Influence oil is As You Please or one of the Follow Me Formula oils and I would do it by first saying directly to my target, “Honey, I can't have you forgetting the milk again. Do you mind if I cast a spell so you can't forget next time?” And then, with permission, I would cast it. And I would be very gentle and make sure it has a time limit on it. And if my partner said no, then I wouldn't do it. Such are my own standards.
You, on the other hand, might know something I don't, or you may have different standards, so obviously I leave it up to you to decide which Twichery control or influence formula you need, if any.
Many of my customers have used my As You Please Oil in beautiful ways. One of our customers loved her co-workers and wanted them to be more harmonious and work together better. Her As You Please spell changed the tone of the entire office from a contentious, gossipy, and backbiting war arena to a joyful oasis of cooperation and peace. Her co-workers were none the wiser. Who am I to dis on that? It's up to each of us to use our own best judgment.
One more interesting (and perhaps obvious) note is these oils work more easily on weak-minded people. But they can work on strong-minded people as well, if you know where the "chink in the armor" is.
I always think witchcraft should be, if anything, an exercise in divine creativity, and not about forcing the world into compliance with my agenda. After all, why kill a fly with a bulldozer? Why destroy someone's will when a simple loving word could create cooperation? I would sooner use a Spiritual Connection Oil to open a special space for connection that is not at all compulsory but sets the stage for fearless authenticity with the person I appear to be at odds with.
In practice, many workers combine influence formulas depending on the situation. Some situations require gentle persuasion, while others may call for stronger domination work. After getting crystal clear on one's values, getting crystal clear on your intention in the situation is top priority before purchasing a single oil.
Articulating your intention in writing is also a good idea. If you read it and it rings right, then you've likely nailed it, at least as far as knowing exactly what you're seeking to accomplish is concerned.
Understanding the level of influence you personally wish to exert allows you to choose the tool that best matches both your situation, your skill level, and your personal philosophy.
Working with a ritual oil is not just about applying the oil itself. It’s about combining intention, consciously generated emotion, and action so t...
