A Note About Preservation and Stability

Because our lotions contain water, goat milk, and nourishing oils, they require a small amount of preservation and stabilization ingredients to remain safe and effective. Ingredients such as Emulsifying Wax, Cetearyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, and Caprylyl Glycol help keep the lotion smooth, prevent separation, and protect against the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast. While their names may sound intimidating, these ingredients are widely used in quality skincare products and are included in small amounts to help ensure the safety and longevity of your lotion.

A Few Ingredients With Unusual Names

Some of our lotion ingredients have scientific names that may sound intimidating, but they each serve a simple purpose in helping create a safe, stable, and luxurious product.

  • Cetearyl Alcohol: A plant-derived ingredient, typically made from coconut or palm oils, that helps give lotion its rich, creamy texture. Despite the name, it is not the type of alcohol found in beverages or rubbing alcohol and is used to help soften and condition the skin.
  • Emulsifying Wax: Helps blend oils and water together into a smooth lotion. Without it, the ingredients would separate into oily and watery layers.
  • Caprylyl Glycol: Derived from naturally occurring fatty acids found in sources such as coconut oil. It helps the skin retain moisture and also supports product freshness.
  • Phenoxyethanol: A preservative used in very small amounts to help protect lotions from bacteria, mold, and yeast. Because our lotions contain water, goat milk, oils, and other nourishing ingredients, a preservative is necessary to help keep the product safe throughout its shelf life.

A Note About Processing and Modern Cosmetic Ingredients

Some ingredients in our lotions, such as Cetearyl Alcohol, begin as plant oils and are then processed to perform specific functions in skincare. For example, Cetearyl Alcohol is typically derived from coconut or palm oils and is used to give lotion its rich, creamy texture.

Customers sometimes notice the word "hydrogenation" when researching ingredients like Cetearyl Alcohol. While hydrogenation has received negative attention in the food industry because of its role in creating trans fats through the partial hydrogenation of edible oils, the process serves a very different purpose in skincare ingredients.

In cosmetic manufacturing, hydrogenation is used to transform plant-derived fatty substances into ingredients that help create stable, smooth, and luxurious lotions. The resulting ingredient is not a partially hydrogenated cooking oil, nor does it function in the body the same way trans fats do when eaten.

We believe in transparency. Some of our ingredients are traditional and minimally processed, such as tallow, goat milk, shea butter, jojoba oil, and coconut oil. Others undergo additional refinement so they can safely help keep the lotion smooth, stable, and enjoyable to use. We choose ingredients based on their performance, safety, and ability to help create a high-quality product.

Why Do Some Ingredients Have Such Complicated Names?

Chemical names are designed to describe the structure of ingredients, not how friendly they sound. Many familiar substances have scientific names that seem intimidating at first glance. For example, water is technically called dihydrogen monoxide, table salt is sodium chloride, and Vitamin C is ascorbic acid.

We believe in being transparent about what goes into our products and are always happy to answer questions about any ingredient we use. And if Rowan or I don't know the answer, we will CERTAINLY FIND IT OUT and let you know.

A Note About Skin Sensitivity

If you personally know of any ingredient in our lotions that does not serve your skin specifically, we encourage you not to use our lotions.

And please let us know. We are 100% always looking to improve our products and the value of our service to you!

We hope you have found this information useful and look forward to helping you more fully Immerse Yourself in Your Spell!
